August 4, 2013 Salmon River Complex Morning Update

Incident Overview

Salmon River Complex fires continue to grow and remain at five-percent containment. Crews made good progress in their efforts to re-establish the old fire line on the north side of the Sawyers Bar community to serve as a contingency for protection. Crews also continued with preparation of structure protection around the community.
A public meeting is scheduled for Sunday, August 4, 2013 at 6:00p.m. at the Salmon River Restoration Center in Sawyers Bar, CA. Briefings will be provided on the current fire situation as well as proposed strategies for containment of the wildfires.
At 6:00p.m. this evening the California Interagency Incident Management Team 1 took over leadership of fire suppression efforts. They are continuing efforts to locate suitable sites for incident command facilities, equipment staging, as well as food and sleeping areas.
Weather temperatures are predicted to warm in the next few days with winds at 5-10 mile per hour. Smoke inversion will increase in the next few days—mostly coming from wildfires in Oregon. There is a possibility for lighting forecast for next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Portions of the Salmon River and the Idlewild Campground continue to be closed for public safety. Portions of National Forest System lands between the Marble Mountain Wilderness and the North Fork of the Salmon River are also closed. Highway 93, Salmon River Road, remains closed at the Butler Fire—approximately eight miles southeast of Somes Bar, CA. Also closed are Nordheimer Flat Campground and the river corridor from that campground to the mouth of Wooley Creek. Maps of the closure areas are posted at the Klamath National Forest website: http://www.fs.usda/Klamath.
Forest visitors are urged to be careful with anything that can cause a spark and start a wildfire. Simple actions may prevent costly fires: Shorten towing safety chains to be sure they do not drag on the roadway; check tire pressure, wheel bearings, breaks, and make sure no metal parts are dragging underneath the vehicle. Carry a small fire extinguisher in case an accident starts a fire start. More fire safety information is available at http://www.preventwildfireca.org. Please report all fires or any suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1.
